In their first meeting, Antonio Costa and Pope address conflict zones, including Ukraine and Gaza

European Council President Antonio Costa discussed global peace efforts with Pope Leo XIV during their first meeting at the Vatican on Friday.

In a post on X, Costa said he was honored to meet the pope as he begins his pontificate. The two held an "inspiring discussion" on achieving peace in conflict zones, including Ukraine and Gaza.

Costa emphasized the importance of continuing joint efforts to tackle global challenges such as climate change, inequality, and the dignity of work.

"I look forward to the EU and the Holy See working together for the common good," he added.

Later in the day, Costa met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome.

They discussed preparing for the upcoming European Council, G7, and NATO summits according to Costa's X post.

The two leaders discussed boosting Europe's defense through more efficient spending and collective security efforts as well as the need for a well-managed EU migration policy.

Geopolitical issues, including transatlantic ties, Ukraine, and Gaza, were also on the agenda. Costa confirmed that he will attend the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome in July.
