Foreign ministers of Germany, France and UK are expected to meet with top Iranian diplomat in Geneva, according to German diplomatic sources
The foreign ministers of Germany, France and the UK plan to meet with their Iranian counterpart this week to seek a diplomatic solution to the Israel-Iran conflict, media reported Wednesday.
They are expected to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday in Geneva, the DPA news agency reported, citing German diplomatic sources. No additional details were provided.
The planned meeting comes amid an escalating conflict between Israel and Iran and reports that the US might join the war at Israel's request. US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he has not made a final decision about whether he will authorize American military forces to conduct strikes on Iran, saying he likes to wait until "one second before it's due.”
Earlier on Wednesday, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called on Iran to take urgent steps toward a diplomatic solution to end the escalating conflict with Israel.
Speaking at a joint news conference with his Jordanian counterpart in Berlin, Wadephul said Germany, France and the UK (E3 countries) stand ready to contribute to a diplomatic solution. However, he emphasized that Tehran must take the first steps.
“Together with my French and British counterparts, as well as with the EU's foreign policy chief, we held a telephone conversation with the Iranian foreign minister on Monday and made a clear proposal. We as the E3 remain ready to negotiate a solution,” Wadephul said.
“But Iran must act urgently to achieve this. Iran must take verifiable, confidence-building measures—specifically by demonstrating that Tehran's leadership does not seek nuclear weapons. It's never too late to come to the negotiating table with honest intentions," he stressed.
