Kyiv mayor warns of ‘massive' strike as Zelenskyy cites 250 drones launched; Moscow claims to intercept 95 Ukrainian UAVs
At least 10 people were injured early Sunday in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv following a new wave of Russian drone attacks, said mayor Vitaliy Klitschko, as air defense systems engaged multiple targets across the city.
Emergency services responded to multiple impact sites. In the Holosiivskyi district, debris from a downed UAV (Unidentified Ariel Vehicle) struck a student dormitory, injuring four people and sparking a fire on the building's exterior.
Damage was also reported in the Dnipro and Desnyanskyi districts, with one person hospitalized and two treated by medics. In Shevchenkivskyi, drone fragments damaged a residential building, injuring two people.
“Air defense is back in action in the capital. Kyiv is under massive attack! Don't leave your shelters!” Klitschko said on social media.
The latest strikes came hours after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the scale of overnight attacks Saturday as “large-scale and vile,” noting that 250 drones, mostly Iranian-made Shaheds, had been launched against Ukrainian territory.
“Some ballistic missiles were successfully intercepted,” Zelenskyy said, emphasizing the need for more air defense support. “Delivering air defense systems to us means real protection for people — here and now.”
Russia's Defense Ministry claimed it intercepted 95 Ukrainian drones overnight, most over the Bryansk region near the border.
The increased aerial assaults reflect a sharp escalation in the drone war between Russia and Ukraine, as both sides continue to target infrastructure and test each other's air defense capabilities.
