Super Lig leaders Besiktaş notch up first victory at new Vodafone Arena, beating Bursaspor to remain top of the table
Turkish Spor Toto Super Lig leaders Besiktas notched up their first victory at home in their newly completed stadium, the Vodafone Arena, as they edged out Bursaspor 3-2 late on Monday.
The narrow win sees the Istanbul club increase the point gap to six against the title contenders and city rivals Fenerbahce.
Besiktas are at the top the league on 66 points. Fenerbahce have a game in hand as they will meet archrivals Galatasaray in an Istanbul Super Lig derby on Wednesday this week.
The Black Eaglers' German striker Mario Gomez scored Besiktas' first home goal at the Vodafone Arena, putting two past Bursaspor. Besiktas's third came from Spanish center back Alexis.
Visitors' Bursaspor Malian midfielder Bakaye Traore and Slovakian winger Miroslav Stoch scored for the visitors.
Sunday's inauguration of the Vodafone Arena was attended by dignitaries including President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and former president Abdullah Gul, as well as club president Fikret Orman and hundreds of supporters.
The Vodafone Arena is the latest in a line of new football stadia being built which Turkey hopes will allow it to host international sporting tournaments.
The Black Eagles' new stadium has a 42,000-seating capacity.
