Over 36,000 displaced in August as Israeli army intensifies attacks on Gaza City under occupation plan, according to UN figures

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) said on Thursday that Israeli strikes continue to displace several families in the Gaza Strip amid widespread famine in the enclave.

“Ongoing bombardments and displacement orders are forcing entire families to abandon their homes, once again, amid fear and destruction,” UNRWA said in a statement on US social media company X.

More than 36,000 people have been displaced across the Gaza Strip since Aug. 14 after the Israeli army launched intensified military assaults on Gaza City under an occupation plan, according to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

On Aug. 8, Israel’s Cabinet approved a plan by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to gradually reoccupy the Gaza Strip, beginning with Gaza City. The plan involves displacing approximately one million Palestinians southward, surrounding the city, and occupying it after intense attacks.

An UNRWA worker said that he has been displaced 19 times since the start of Israel’s genocidal war in October 2023, the agency reported.

“People are hungry and exhausted. This must stop,” UNRWA said, calling for an urgent ceasefire.

Israel has killed nearly 63,000 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, which is facing famine.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
