French president welcomes US-brokered Armenia-Azerbaijan agreement, urges swift signing of peace treaty

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday reaffirmed France’s support for Armenia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity following a phone conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

In a statement on X, Macron said the talks took place after the Aug. 8 meeting in Washington between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which led to an agreement aimed at normalizing relations between the two countries with the support of the US.

“I once again welcomed the agreement reached, thanks to the commitment of the United States, between Armenia and Azerbaijan with a view to the normalization of relations between the two countries,” Macron said.

Expressing hope that the accord would “quickly lead to the signing and ratification of a peace treaty respectful of the interests of each side,” Macron underscored France’s commitment to peace and prosperity in the South Caucasus.

He also reiterated France’s readiness to “support and contribute to ongoing efforts, including strengthening interconnections, in coordination with all regional actors and partners.”

Macron said he and Pashinyan agreed to further deepen bilateral relations in all areas, building on the Armenian leader’s July 14 visit to Paris.

"Prime Minister Pashinyan emphasized that the established peace opens up new investment opportunities in Armenia and the region," said a separate statement by the Armenian Prime Minister's Office.

It added that Macron and Pashinyan expressed their mutual willingness to continue active political dialogue between Paris and Yerevan on bilateral and international agendas.
