The coup attempt by FETÖ separated the twins Erkan and Volkan Yiğit for the first time in their lives. Erkan Yiğit was martyred and his twin Volkan Yiğit became a veteran, as they were resisting against putschists in front of the Presidential Complex.
The Yiğit brothers rushed to the Presidential Complex in Beştepe, closing their market they had been operating together, after they heard about the coup attempt. Ghazi Volkan Yiğit, who talked about the martyrdom of his twin, said that the first bomb was dropped just as they started their morning prayer. Yiğit continued his words, “That bomb crashed in the iron bars of the Presidential Complex. Then they dropped a bomb around the Gendarmerie around 06:30 in the morning. There were a lot of people wounded. Just as I was about to ask for help for the people there, my twin said, ‘Volkan, come here. The second plane is coming.’ We were running back to back. The second explosion happened at that moment. My twin was martyred and I became a veteran.”
They were separated for the first time after 35 years
Volkan Yiğit, who became a veteran after shrapnel impaled his arm, said it was hard after his brother was martyred, “You wake up in the morning. You wash your face and you see him when you look in the mirror. He was me and I was him. We have never been separated for 35 years. We served our military service at the same time, we got married at the same time and we had children at the same time. We have been working in the same place for 35 years. We have never been separated until that plane broke us apart.
The martyr Erkan Yiğit, who was from Ankara, was married. He was the father of 12 year old Osman Beyazıt and 5 year old Recep Tayyip. Yiğit was buried in the Ankara Cimşit Graveyard.
The name of martyr Erkan Yiğit was given to an Anatolian Imam Hatip high school in Etimesgut, Ankara and a middle school in Reşadiye, Tokat.
