Fazıl Gürs was martyred by falling off the Sıhhiye Bridge near the General Staff Headquarters Building, after being pushed by the tanks that he fearlessly faced on the night of July 15th. 36 year old Fazıl, heard about the coup attempt when he was in his house. He went into the streets upon the call of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
He went to the General Staff Headquarters at 12:30 AM with his father-in-law Necati Sayın and his wife’s two sisters. He was was married to Bilge and was the father of a 6 year old son. He said good bye to his wife on the phone when he was at the scene that night. 20 minutes after the phone call, he was martyred.
“There lies my husband, and my father next to him”
Necati Sayın Fazil’s father in law, who resisted against the putschists alongside Fazıl, was martyred as well on the night of July 15th. Fazıl’s sisters-in-law, Ayşe and Ülkü Sayın became veterans. Bilge Gürs, wife of Fazıl, described her feelings, “It’s not something I can describe. There lies my husband in that grave, and my father lies next to him.”
The name Martyr Fazıl Gürs was given to an imam hatip middle school in Adıyaman.
