One of the heroines of that night honoring Nene Hatun, who left her baby in cradle to carry ammunition to frontlines, was the 51-year-old Sevgi Yeşilyurt. Martyred on the Bosphorus Bridge, Yeşilyurt was targeted by the traitors’ bullets while protecting her country.
Yeşilyurt, who raised her son Sadık (29) and daughter Filiz (32) by working at an accountance office in Eminönü, left home upon President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s call, and went to the Bosphorus Bridge after she learned it was being occupied. Facing the soldiers directly, who blocked the bridge, Sevgi Yeşilyurt was martyred on the scene.
“She was a daredevil for her country”
Hüseyin Sarıhan, Sevgi Yeşilyurt’s son in law, stated as following, adding that his mother in law had a pure love for her country: “She was a daredevil for her country. She had left before the call of President Erdoğan, around 10. First, she went to Ümraniye. After she learned that the bridge was blocked, she went there running.” Sarıhan, who talked to his mother-in-law for the last time at 02.23, stated, “She asked for my blessings. At that moment, she was on the bridge. She said, ‘I won’t return, even if it’s death waiting.’ Neighbours, who saw her on the way, told me that she was wearing her shoes on the way. When they opened fire, people told my mother-in-law to hit the deck. But only she was standing, and she was shot down running towards the tank. These are the words of witnesses, who were with her on that night.”
Martyr Sevgi Yeşilyurt was buried in the Karacaahmet Cemetery on July 17th Sunday, following the recitement of her funeral prayer at the Şakirin Mosque. The martyr’s name was given to an Imam Hatip middleschool in Maltepe, İstanbul.
