‘They must hit Israel with the toughest sanctions possible to end the Genocide, sanction Israel’s economy, sanction Israel’s leaders, end all arms sales now,' says Richard Burgon
A UK lawmaker urged the government Monday to impose the toughest sanctions possible on Israel "to end the genocide" following a deadly Israeli attack on Nasser Hospital in the southern Gaza Strip.
Labour Party Member of Parliament (MP) Richard Burgon denounced the Israeli strike, saying he is "sick of the empty statements" from so many governments, including the British government.
"They must hit Israel with the toughest sanctions possible to end the Genocide," he said on US social media company X’s platform.
The Health Ministry in Gaza said 20 people were killed, including five journalists and a firefighter, in an Israeli strike on the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis in southern Gaza.
Among the deceased was Hussam al-Masri, who worked as a photojournalist for the Reuters news agency, while the Qatari channel Al Jazeera confirmed that its photographer Mohammad Salama was also killed.
A medical source confirmed to Anadolu the death of photojournalist Mariam Abu Dagga. Photojournalist Moaz Abu Taha was also killed in the Israeli strike.
"Sanction Israel’s economy. Sanction Israel’s leaders. End all arms sales now," said Burgon, who has been the MP for Leeds East since 2015.
The deadly attack on Palestinian journalists drew a wave of condemnation from media organizations.
Israel has killed more than 62,700 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, which is facing famine.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
