Modi arrives in China on Saturday, 1st time in 7 years, to attend 25th Heads of State Council meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organization
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in China’s northern city of Tianjin, just after US imposed tariffs on Indian goods this week, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Modi arrived in China on Saturday, his first time in seven years, to attend the 25th Heads of State Council meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and meet with Xi.
The Indian prime minister is also expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.
The two-day SCO summit from Sunday to Monday convenes amid escalating geopolitical tensions, including Israel's war in the Gaza Strip, the Ukraine crisis and international tariff disputes.
The meeting comes after the US has doubled its tariffs on India from 25% to 50%, citing New Delhi’s oil purchases from Russia.
Xi and Modi met last in October on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in the Russian city of Kazan.
Founded in 2001, the SCO is a political and security alliance comprising 10 members: China, Russia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus.
In 2023, India’s exports to China amounted to $18.1B while its imports from China totaled $125B.
