Kim Keon Hee’s first detention period was due to end on Thursday

The detention of South Korea’s former first lady Kim Keon Hee has been extended by 10 days until the end of this month, prosecutors said on Wednesday.

The special counsel Min Joong-ki's team said that court has decided to extend her detention period to Aug. 31, according to the Yonhap News agency.

She was arrested last week and her first detention period was due to end on Thursday.

Under South Korean law, prosecutors must indict the accused within the extended detention period, as no further extension is allowed.

Kim has been summoned on Thursday for a third round of questioning by special counsel team.

She faces multiple charges, including election meddling, bribery and abusing her power during Yoon's tenure.
