Tokyo to continue its ‘utmost diplomatic efforts for peaceful resolution' of Tehran's nuclear issue, says top diplomat Iwaya
Japan on Tuesday called for a peaceful resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue and urged Tehran to "not miss the opportunity" to reach a pact with the US.
This was discussed during a phone call between Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi and his Iranian counterpart Seyyed Abbas Araghchi.
Iwaya emphasized that Japan “strongly hopes for a peaceful resolution of the issue and that Iran should not miss the opportunity for an agreement between the United States and Iran,” read a statement from Japan's Foreign Ministry.
He strongly urged Iran to “take concrete actions to fulfill its obligations” under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards agreement.
“Japan will continue its utmost diplomatic efforts for the peaceful resolution of the issue,” said Iwaya.
Araghchi explained the position and efforts of Iran on its nuclear issue, the statement added.
The phone call between the Japanese and Iranian top diplomats comes amid the ongoing talks between Tehran and Washington, facilitated by Oman, towards reaching a pact on Iran's nuclear program.
