Germany has repeatedly warned about famine in Gaza Strip and it calls on Israel 'to allow sufficient humanitarian aid' into the enclave,' says Foreign Ministry

Germany said on Friday that there is famine without doubt in Gaza and called on Israel to allow sufficient aid into the war-ravaged enclave to stop the ongoing starvation of Palestinians.

“I think there is no doubt that there is hunger in Gaza, and we have just heard about these reports, which have just come in,” Josef Hinterseher, a Foreign Ministry spokesman, told a press briefing in Berlin.

Hinterseher made the remarks when asked about the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report saying that Israel's restrictions and military attacks have directly caused the famine now declared in the Gaza Governorate.

Germany has repeatedly warned about famine in the Gaza Strip, and it calls on Israel “to allow sufficient humanitarian aid into the enclave,” he added.

Meanwhile, German Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan said that the IPC report clearly demonstrated the catastrophic situation in Gaza.

"More and more people – and especially children – are starving to death before our very eyes. This cannot continue. The famine is entirely man-made," she noted.

"While access to aid supplies has improved slightly, the IPC report also shows that this is far from sufficient. An immediate ceasefire is needed, and at the same time, (the Palestinian group) Hamas must release the hostages immediately and unconditionally," she added.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees said Friday that famine in Gaza, deliberately created by the Israeli government, is confirmed, after also being formally confirmed by the IPC.

Israel has killed more than 62,100 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
