Move brings total number of Turkish products granted EU geographical indication protection to 33
The European Union on Monday granted Türkiye's Aydin pine nuts (Aydın çam fıstığı) Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status.
The move recognizes the nuts' unique characteristics and traditional cultivation methods in the western province of Aydın.
"The nuts are distinguished by their very pointed shape, smooth texture and light cream to dark beige color. They have a slightly oily consistency and a delicate pine aroma and flavor," the European Commission said in a statement announcing the decision.
"The meticulous harvesting and drying process preserves their unique qualities," it added.
The registration brings the total number of Turkish products with EU geographical indication protection to 33, including various agricultural products and foodstuffs.
