East Asian country launches largest AI center to build ‘AI highway' and join top 3 global AI powers
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Friday vowed extensive government support for artificial intelligence (AI), calling it a core driver of economic growth and national competitiveness.
“The new government will actively provide full-scale support for AI so that the Republic of Korea can leap forward as a fast-growing nation, making AI a core driver of economic growth,” Lee said at a ceremony launching a major AI data center project in Ulsan, according to Seoul-based Yonhap News.
The center, once completed, will be South Korea's largest AI facility and serve as the main hub for Lee's “AI highway” initiative. The project is part of a broader plan to position the country among the world's top three AI powers.
Lee also announced plans for significant tax incentives and regulatory reforms aimed at attracting private investment and global AI talent.
He stressed the need for developing a sovereign national AI model that would be publicly accessible, along with customized models tailored for innovation in key sectors.
