Working as a civilian officer in the 1st Army Command, 50 year old Köksal Karmil was martyred as he was carrying the casualties who were shot by putschists on the Bosphorus Bridge, on the night of July 15th.
Köksal was resting in his house during the coup attempt. He rushed to the Bosphorus Bridge after he heard that the traitors blocked the bridge and were targeting civilians. He was targeted by traitors on the bridge as he was carrying the wounded. Father of 5 children, his wife Gülsüm, said, “My husband said to me, ‘I couldn’t miss this honor, I need to defend my country.’ And went into the streets.”
Karmil kept in touch with his wife the whole night. In his last phone call, he told his wife that there were many wounded around him and putschists were firing from tanks. At 05:00, his family received the news that Köksal Karmil was wounded. Karmil did not survive the operation.
Köksal Karmil was buried in the Ümraniye Kocatepe Cemetery after his funeral which was held in the Meyveli Bahçe Mosque.
