Death would mark 17th suicide case in Israeli military since start of year, according to local media

An Israeli reservist soldier who had taken part in a recent military offensive in the Gaza Strip was found dead Thursday in an apparent suicide, local media reported.

The Yedioth Ahronoth daily, citing a military statement, said the body of the 28-year-old soldier was found in Switzerland Forest near Tiberias.

The officer reportedly served with the 99th Division operating in the Gaza Strip and was part of a recently formed unit that took part in the fighting in recent weeks.

The Israeli military said the Military Police have opened an investigation into the officer's death, with the findings to be submitted to the Military Advocate General for review.

If confirmed, it would mark the 17th suicide case in the military since the beginning of the year.

The Israeli army has continued its war on the Gaza Strip since October 2023 despite international calls for a ceasefire, killing more than 61,700 Palestinians in what has been described as the second year of genocide in Gaza.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its actions in the enclave.
