Fenerbahce eliminated Besiktas in Ziraat Turkish Cup Round 16 with a score of 1-0 on Sunday night in Istanbul.
The match in Besiktas' home turf Vodafone Arena saw two Istanbulite giants going against each other to advance to the quarter finals in Ziraat Turkish Cup.
At 27th minute, Besiktas' Portuguese player Talisca's shot hit Fenerbahce defender Simon Kjaer and went outside.
At 38th minute, Besiktas once again came close to scoring a goal, this time Oguzhan Ozyakup's header went outside.
The things got heated at 41th minute, when Robin van Persie got into a tackle with Besiktas defender Dusko Tosic. Tosic could not keep his nerves under control and headbutted the Dutch forward.
The referee ejected Tosic with a red card and gave van Persie a yellow card. Besiktas players and fans objected to referee's decision for many minutes.
The second half started with Besiktas tried to control Fenerbahce's attacks, being down to 10-man in the field.
Fenerbahce found their goal at 72nd minute, when Robin van Persie coolly finished a cross from Jeremain Lens, giving his team the crucial 1-0 lead.
Besiktas, being undermanned, never got their offense going and could not find an equalizing goal in the remaining minutes.
With the score Fenerbahce moved to the next round in Ziraat Turkish Cup.
