Mexico defeated reigning champions Germany 1-0 on Sunday evening in the World Cup Group F match at Luzhniki Stadium in Russia.

A swift counter-attack in the 35th minute scored by Hirving Lozano was enough to upset the Germans as they started the tournament with a loss.

Germany's Toni Kroos and Julian Brandt both hit the woodwork as they wasted chances to equalize the match.

Mexican players and fans were jubilant after the match.

"In the first half we played very badly. We were not able to impose our usual way of playing attacking and our passing. In the second half we were able to press match but Mexico also pulled back," said German Manager Joachim Low after the match, according to FIFA.com.

On the other hand, Mexican Manager Juan Carlos Osorio dedicated the win to fans.

"I want to take advantage of this opportunity to dedicate this great result to all the Mexican fans that made the journey out here, to the people behind the scenes and generally who support us. We need to give all the credit where it is due, and that is with the players," he said.

Hirving Lozano, the hero for Mexico, was selected Man of the Match.

"It‘s not about me, it was a collective effort. We played without fear and my teammates were incredible," he said.
