UK, France leading effort under 'Coalition of the Willing' to deter further Russian attacks, according to Finnish daily Iltalehti
European countries are prepared to deploy 50,000 ground troops to Ukraine if a ceasefire is agreed, a Finnish daily reported on Monday, citing foreign and security policy sources.
According to Iltalehti, an operational plan has already been drawn up to send an entire army force, commanded by a Western general, as part of a security guarantee for Kyiv.
The deployment would be carried out under the "Coalition of the Willing," led by UK and France.
The presence of 50,000 Western soldiers would serve as a deterrent, the report said, effectively preventing Russia from continuing its invasion. The force would be supported by allied air and naval units, ensuring protection of Ukrainian airspace.
While Ukraine could retain its political sovereignty even if it lost territory, the reported plan aims to provide Kyiv with a credible security umbrella in the event of a ceasefire, the daily reported.
