Bern 'deeply alarmed' by dangerous escalation between Israel, Iran, including 'today's attacks by the US,' says Foreign Ministry

Switzerland on Sunday urged an immediate return to diplomacy by all parties involved in the Iran nuclear issue, describing the situation after the recent US attacks on Iran as "dangerous."

"Switzerland is deeply alarmed by the dangerous escalation between Israel and Iran since 13 June, including today's attacks by the US," the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs said in a post on X.

The ministry emphasized the importance of full respect for international law, including the UN Charter and international humanitarian law.

Bern called on all sides involved in the conflict to "exercise maximum restraint, protect civilians and civilian infrastructure and immediately return to diplomacy."

Switzerland, which has long served as a neutral mediator in international disputes, reiterated that its "good offices remain at the disposal of the parties."

The attack came after top officials of France, Germany, the UK, and EU met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Geneva on Friday with a goal to de-escalate the current conflict between Israel and Iran. The officials left Geneva with a commitment to continue the dialogue and meet again soon.

The situation in the region further deteriorated after US President Donald Trump announced Sunday that American forces carried out "very successful" airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites, amid growing fears of a broader conflict in the region.

Following the US strikes, Iran called on the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting to condemn the US aggression and to hold accountable those who violate international law.

Hostilities broke out on June 13 when Israel launched airstrikes on several sites across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory strikes.

Israeli authorities said at least 25 people have been killed and hundreds injured since then in Iranian missile attacks.

Meanwhile, in Iran, 430 people have been killed and more than 3,500 wounded in the Israeli assault, according to the Iranian Health Ministry.
