Ukrainian president says Aug. 1 declared day of mourning in Ukraine's capital

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed on Friday that 31 people were killed and 159 injured in yesterday’s Russian attack on Kyiv.

Search-and-rescue efforts have ended, and Aug. 1 will be observed as a day of mourning in the capital, Zelenskyy said on Telegram.

Zelenskyy earlier described the overnight bombardment on July 31 as "massive," noting Kyiv was the main target.

Kyiv Military Administration head Serhiy Tkachenko reported eight fatalities in the city and damage to over 100 structures.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed it carried out a group strike on targets in Ukraine, claiming it targeted only military objectives.

The ministry also claimed that the Russian forces captured seven settlements in the Donetsk and Zoporizhzhia regions, including the city of Chasiv Yar, called "the key to Donbas" due to its strategic position.

It also claimed to have repelled Ukraine's air attacks, saying air defense systems intercepted and destroyed six guided aerial bombs, six US-manufactured HIMARS rockets, three Czech-made Vampire multiple launch rocket systems projectiles, one long-range Neptune cruise missile, and 1,446 fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles.
